I've been seeing a lot of questions lately from knitters and crocheters asking "Where to Start?" when it comes to designing. What is the actual process for creating a pattern from an original idea? Well, every designer have their own design process. You will have your own way. In the FREE 5-Day Design Challenge, we will explore how to develop an idea to making a sample.

Designing can be overwhelming, I get it. And in this FREE 5-Day Design Challenge, I will break down the process into simple steps that you can use for every design.

Inside this FREE 5-Day Design Challenge
(featuring daily emails, and Facebook community, and more) you’ll learn:

 Exactly how designing works

The step-by-step process for going from idea to a finished sample
and more...

So let's get into it...

FAQ
Who is the design challenge for?
The FREE 5-Day Design Challenge is for any knitter or crocheter interested in turning an original idea into a pattern.

What will I learn during the challenge?
At the end of the challenge you will a concrete foundation for going from idea to design and finished sample. With this challenge, you will be on your way to building the confidence you need to publish your own design and submitting to your favorite magazine's call for submission.

When does the challenge start?
The FREE 5-Day Design Challenge will start on May 1 and run until May 5th. Each day, you will receive an email with that day's lesson. You will be able to post your progress and questions on a Facebook page so that you can share your progress with other participants and get inspired as well.

How much time will I need to dedicate daily to the challenge?
Depending on the design size and complexity, you might need to dedicate about an hour each day. Each morning for 5-days you will receive a lesson with action items that are designed to move you closer to your design goals.

Can I just wait until the weekend or a later date to complete the challenge?
Sure. You will have the complete 5-days challenge at your convenience. But I would highly recommend you going through the challenge during the scheduled time frame because I will be available to answer all your questions, you will have a community of people doing it with you, plus (**cough**cough**) bonuses you won't want to miss out on.

How much experience do I need to successfully complete the challenge?
If you are an experienced knitter or crocheter, able to read stitch patterns, able adjust and place a stitch pattern into a shape (for example, you need to be able to take a 12-st pattern and turn it into a hat or mittens, etc.). The truth is, if you are just wondering if you can design a pattern, take the challenge and find out!

Will I have a fully completed pattern at the end of the 5-days?
Probably not. This FREE 5-Day Design Challenge will get you VERY close to having a developed pattern, but you will might need more time to finish up the sample, depending on what you are designing. Additionally, we will not be covering pattern writing and publishing here, but the information we cover will get you ready to take that next step.

Will you (Tian) review our progress along the way?
Absolutely. I am here to help you every step along the way.
Each day you will have a lesson with a homework/action plan because tactics without action is ineffective. Sure you can just do the day's lesson along then and wait for the next day's lesson, but how would you like feedback and ask questions if you get stuck? I will create a post each day on my Facebook page (head over there and like the page so you don't miss out on any gems I drop over there) that you will be able to post and share photos, make comments and have conversations on the lesson, ask questions, and track your progress. Throughout the day I will check in, but each evening at 8PM (eastern time) I will go on the page to review your progress and answer your questions and give tips.

Well, that's the FREE 5-Day Design Challenge. I think I covered everything, but if I've missed a glaring question, please leave a comment below or email me.

I am so excited to get started on May 1, 2017. Make sure you're signed up and share with your friends. Make sure you're signed up here to get on the waiting list so you don't miss when we start.

The bottom line, you have a ton of ideas. You've dreamt of developing the idea in your head into a pattern you can share.

But, you're scared to get started.

You lack the confidence.

With the FREE 5-Day Design Challenge, my process creates more confidence, helps you put together a strong pattern that you can publish and proud to show off because it's based on my individualized strategy and experience working with publications, publishing dozens of my own designs, and tech editing hundreds of knit and crochet patterns.

Look, I've been there where you are now. It use to take forever to put together a design.

I was scared to submit ideas to a magazine because I was scared it would get accepted and then I wouldn't be able to make the pattern as I imagined. This was my worst dream.

I did it. I figured it out. I've helped other designers build their confidence to submit to magazine, get the design accepted, and turned in the finished pattern and sample like a champ - now they see their designs in print.

You can be the designer of your dream - and I want to help.

Try something new

Is this just me?

Do you remember when you first started knitting? Do you remember your feelings of anxiety and fear when you were learning to cast on and working a knit stitch for the very first time?

Last night my almost 13-year old and I attended a paint and dip (there was not sipping but instead we dipped fruit and crackers because it was held at a church – spoiler, it was still super fun) fundraiser event. For weeks leading up to the event I dreaded attending because I have never done anything like this before and like when I started knitting, the fear of starting something new was overwhelming. If you want to be honest, I almost didn’t attend and instead just making a donation because I valued the cause the money was towards.

In the end, I decided to put on my big girl undies and jump in with no great expectation but to just have fun. And that worked.

I’ve been good at so many things for so long that it is difficult to go back to that beginner stage where I know nothing. Going back to the point where I am asking questions and am filled with dread of the unknown.

The truth is, this is not a bad thing. I walked away from the event with a painting I absolutely loved that is a reflection of me - this is going up on my wall in my office so I can look at it every day when I work as a reminder of starting over with fear and coming out the other side with something beautiful.

There were people there at the event with some artist background that I was super jealous of how their painting was turning out. I wanted to add a branch like the woman on my right or more random colors like my son on my left. But near the end of the night, when I steps back and looked at what I have done, I could no longer see the wonky strokes or the area where I messed up. It looked like a piece of art I wanted to share, and am sharing with you right now.

The bottom line is that we are afraid of trying new things because starting from zero is scary. No one wants to be a novice again because being an expert, having experience is comfortable and easy. Starting anew is hard. But such beautiful things come from the doing, even when you are afraid.

Don’t let the unknown hold you back because the thing you are afraid to do can be the best thing you’ve ever done. Take a risk and go be remarkable. You got this, girl.
